Bubble Machine
Working in collaboration with Clemence Lam we made a prototype that was a part of our first course at Konstfack, first designed as a mix between two projects about soap and sound.
The machine has no obvious purpose - something that seems strange when design is so often rooted in function. We decided the best way to describe the machine was to compare it to a fireplace - it does not make you warm but its intriguing and ever changing patterns tend to capture people.
When an object has no purpose - people strive to attach meaning to it. We tested our prototype with various people and found acted pragmatically by each attaching their own meaning and rituals to it.
The calmness of the bubbles and the low noise from the pipe create an atmosphere of calmness and spirituality which aid the contemplation of the machine.
